Structured Lilies, Lilies Structured

A material study with wool and wet felting for fabric transformation.

Wool, a natural fiber with unique microscopic scales on its surface, can felt and shrink when subjected to a mixture of heat, moisture, and agitation (the reason why wool sweaters are to be drycleaned). Structured Lilies, Lilies Structured is a surface experimentation utilizing this characteristic of wool. The entire fabric is woven flat on the industrial Jacquard loom with wool yarn floating in large areas of the pattern. Later, fabric was washed and machine dried, stopping at intervals to check shrinkage.
